That really is gorgeous. The temperamental ones are always the loveliest :)

I think the hardest ones to ID are the ones which have adult foliage which looks nothing like their juvenile stages. S fischerii is a classic.

Treehugger you have a gorgeous collection there. Where have you picked up most of your plants. They certainly are different.

I do not have many but Bantel's Sensation is my favorite. I like how it has a lot of different leaf patterns.

Your favorite is a beauty too Stush.

Where I live there aren't many places to shop for plants except, home Depot, Lowes, etc. Only one garden center and only a small selection of houseplants at any time. I do travel and when ever I get a chance I stop at garden centers. I've been collecting for 12 or 13 years now. Some many plants not enough money!

treehugger,

I understand the travel and plant collection. I use to travel for business and was out of town Mon-Fri. Most business people run for the restaurant and a couple glasses of wine to come down for the day. I was running to local nurseries before they closed. Pick up a take out order or order room service after shopping. Hilarious!

I even would take the plants the landscapers and hotel plant designers were going to throw away. I would ask them if they would give me the plants and they would hand me the plant instead of throwing it in the dumpster.

Cinta,
I still remember some of your stories of dumpster diving. We miss you at the other site. I almost did the same at K-marts when they threw away a whole stack of plants including the snake plants. They threated to call the police on me. Didn't matter, my wife was with me and she would have killed me. I augured with the manger for not reducing them on sale before throwing them away. I would have gathered them all up and told my wife, 'Honey, I know people who would give these a good home'.

Yes Stush I bet I am on a couple of hotel security cameras. See this little woman grabbing plants in her silk suits and heels running back to her room with a arm full of plants. Rolling on the floor laughing

@treehugger, Hi, The plants are wonderful. Wish I knew what names they all are. I like the way they look. What a beautiful collection. I was just told about this thread and I am amazed at how pretty these plants can get. You have most of them on clay pots. Is that the secret of keeping them so nice? Where do you keep them. Which sun do they get if any. Morning or Afternoon? Forgive the questions but I am really new at these plants.

Greetings. I am kind of new here. No, I did not read all 446 replies (so far) to this thread, sorry. I have 109 species of Sans. Some I have had for over 40 years. Many are blooming right now. When they do bloom, which is very often year 'round, I run around with a small paint brush trying to create new crosses. Something to do. Take some patience though as the plants grown from seed will not show their "true colors" for quite some time. I do not have the common types. I find it more interesting to play with rarer species. Hope I can contribute here. Gene

But the "common types" can be just as interesting Gene! Hope you do manage to go through this whole thread as there are some very good posts here.

Hello everyone! I am new to snake plants and am researching to find out how best to keep my new Sansevieria trifasciata healthy and happy. I read in one of the posts in this thread that it's good to repot a new snake plant in a cactus type mix. Should all the 'store soil' be discarded or should I mix some of it with the cactus mix? Also how should I water when replanting? She's going to be an inside houseplant and is living on the second shelf of my under window plant stand out of direct light. It's a west window so gets strong light in the afternoon which brings me to my next question, can I let my snake plant get any of the direct afternoon light and if so, for how long? Thanks!

I am amazed perusing this thread and seeing all the different varieties of snake plants! Now I want more!

Welcome! @GrannyMarie, I too am new to snakes but not new to ATP. They are amazing little plants and I am also looking forward to learning more about them.

Gene, you sound like you are a real professional grower and collector of these plants. I am sure we will be able to learn something from you. My passion over the years has changed from time to time but there is something about the snake plant that interests me. I have propagated and grown gardenias, jasmine, bougainvillea and mandevilla plus schlumbergera , streptocarpus, to name a few. I have a few Epis... having said that, I still have so much to learn about so many of these plants people don't usually think of as "special" houseplants. Looking forward to your pictures and posts.
I am really anxious to hear about the flowers and the fragrances, if any.

OK, a few grab shots. Hard to know where to start. They are all crowded together under lights right now. In another 3-4 weeks when they are outdoors it will be much easier to get better pix. Gene

Impressive Gene,
I have many of the ones you got. And like you, I have them under lights in my basement. Plan to bring them out come next month. My all time favorite is Sans. trif. Futura Asahi. It has all the colors and every leaf is different.
Stush

These are so pretty. Why do you keep them in the basement under lights until now? Do you then put them outside in the summer? In the sun?

JB,
If only you could see my house. My wife keeps reminding me to stop. I have a 55 gal. old fish tank in my living room filled with Sans. mostly small hahnii and some small growing sans. I heat it with a single candle in a jar. Lit about 4 hrs. a day. All the window seals are full of my other collections, Haworthia, Echevieria, Jades, Stapelias, and Euphorbia which some are very large. I think my sans collection is down to about 50 now.
Come next month when I am sure of no sudden temp drops, I can take my collection out to put on my porches. Partical Sun. to some can take full sun.
Treehugger,
I wish I could send you a S. 'Futura Asahi' but right now I got one pup left and several takers. Maybe next year. My two plants are stacking. Growing over 15 leaves each. I don't have to heart to cut the top off to make it pup.

Sans. Pinguicula. Walking Sans. Very slow growing plant. General rule in the plant world, the slower it grows the more it costs. Saw a plant on-line the other day that does not put out its 2nd leaf until it is 150 years old. But, I stray. Just I case you have not seen it "pup." Here's 2 different plants that are throwing out pups. They will put their own roots down and then you could separate them from Mom. Both of these I will leave together for now. I have one large pot that has a family of 8 in it. This is probably one of the plants that most impresses visitors. Gene
