Porkpal, thanks for reminding me. I had to go back outside and retrace my steps to see which ones they were. I can't seem to remember in the short time it takes to walk back into the house. Rolling my eyes.

I seem to remember the J&P catalogs being rose scented. I remember the year they came out with 'Love', "Honor' and 'Cherish', and being intrigued by them. I didn't have roses until several years later though. We bought a house that had several. 'Double Delight' was the one that seduced me into getting more (and more).

I don't remember the scented catalogs, but I didn't really start buying roses until 1984. Love, Honor, and Cherish came out in 1980. I was living in Piedmont before 1984 and grew very few roses because the wonderful Mediterranean climate there was perfect for tropicals. And frankly, I didn't do much gardening there because there were always so many other things going on in the Bay Area. I actually started gardening on a major scale when I moved up here because there was nothing else to do in Sebastopol. Hilarious!

My folks always had roses, so it was natural that I grow roses, along with other plants, even in college in apartment patios. My kids grew up with roses and intensive gardening chores. I was so thrilled when my oldest daughter rented a house in San Diego and called, so excited, to tell me her new house had a rose by the door and she was just sure it was Tropicana. We had Tropicana, Tiffany, and Mr. Lincoln at every house we lived in, always by the front door so we could smell them often. Lovey dubby

Sherry, I had forgotten about the scented catalogs- thanks for bringing back memories! I remember the catalog that year when Love, Honor, and Cherish were new intros. I believe my first rose purchase was from that one- Double Delight was among my first roses. I was in high school at that time, and this is how I spent my allowance money LOL.

That's funny. I spent my lawn mowing and painting money on books, plants, and lunch, in that order. Mostly, I bought tropicals, little starter plants. My grandmother lived 5 hours away, and she and I would trade cuttings. I was always trying to find a plant she didn't already have. Since she didn't drive, she was limited to what she swapped with friends. At 16, I was driving all over Kansas City looking for new plants. She had a Seven Sisters rose in her yard, and I'm sad that I never started a cutting off of it.
The first "new" rose I remember buying was Olympiad. I had a brand new house, and I was working a 2nd job at a place called "The Olympiad", and a friend got to go to the Olympics, so the name attracted me. I planted it next to Oklahoma. None of my roses at that house did well because the builder left heavy clay up by the house, and I fought that clay for years. I learned what NOT to do at that house.
Today is probably our last warm day, as a front is coming through, bringing much needed rain. I have tulip bulbs to plant, along with trees, peonies, daffodils and some clearance mums and pansies. And I want to watch the Royals game. And I have to work. At least we got all the grass seed in this morning, all 50 lbs of it!
We're now in the final hours of the last gasp...and I'm welcoming fall, just to have a break!

Sometimes I feel a little jealous of those of you who live in climates where you *can* take a break. It goes all year here. Right now, I'm trying to get things in the ground while the soil is still warm and not needing as much water. I'm deadheading perennials etc.. Once the first rain hits, I'm attacking weeds. Right after Christmas I start pruning, and that goes on into February.. I'm still battling weeds into spring, and mowing and firing up the burn piles.. It never ends, but it keeps me out of trouble Whistling

The weed pressure is never-ending in our warm climates. I just finished spreading pre-emergent herbicide around several rows of roses, hoping they won't disappear into the wilderness this "winter". I hate using chemical controls, but there are not enough hours in the day to do all I need to do to do on the farm, and I don't want to give up my rose addiction.

Oh yes, I remember the J&P "scented" catalogs - an effective sales tactic.

Porkpal, did you ever try corn gluten? - I thought the results were good.

Hmmm... Sounds good but, as you need to use such a lot, it would be expensive! I may give it a try, however. Thanks.

I only applied it once not twice in one year. I bought it at a farm store ( less money). I heard they will be eliminating all the chemical pre-emergent's here starting next year.

Margie, what are the reasons they'll be eliminating chemical pre-emergents? Here, there's the big push against Roundup, but no one says a peep about pre-emergents.

Sherry, I wasn't given an explanation. Lot's of regulations.
Here, I have to put the fertilizer down before Nov. 1 otherwise you get fined.
You can read about the nitrogen and phosphorus laws in the following link.

I think you have more regulations than California.

I haven't been out in the garden as much with the camera.. but I went out the other day and captured a few pictures.

I just picked up 'Sunset Celebration' a couple of weeks ago. I'm really fond of peachy roses.

'Easy Does It' is another very recent acquisition.
Thumb of 2015-11-01/Henhouse/bc8053

'Moonsprite' picks up pinkish tones this time of year.

'Dearest'- love, love, love this rose!

'Midnight Blue'

The rose that got me interested in roses so many years ago.. 'Double Delight'

This is a seedling that came up behind 'Sunny June' and 'Moonsprite'. It's a little more soft yellow with a blush in the spring.

Thank-you Porkpal. I like it so far, but I'm going to give it a couple more years to see how it grows. The only other seedling I had was a twiggy mess. This one seems to have a better habit, so far.
