thanks lin! yeah, still so hot and dry here, sitting at 103F outside ugh..very calm, no wind..blanket furnace heat! My window of chance for blooms for my other plants also when cool downs return, at least into the low 80's.

Well sadly those blooms I was waiting for in Sept for Hoya Krimson Queen did not materialize...something ate the buds! Grumbling Grumbling

Thankfully, we are having an extended warm period, bearably nice, so Hoya KQ is doing a second attempt this Oct, on that same old peduncle:
Thumb of 2015-10-07/tarev/a13cad

Entire plant still okay, some nice pinkish and cream variegation on some leaves remain:

Hoya kerrii variegata is also trying I think to do a 2nd flush on the existing peduncles..slowly doing pointy tips on those peduncles: it is still warm here, heading to low 90's by next tuesday:

Photo update of Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen'..we continue getting comfy warm days and nice cool nights in mid 50's, this lone bloom formation continues. I am getting so excited!

That's definitely exciting. I thought some of mine would produce peduncles but they didn't. Thumbs down

Hi Cameron, this plant of mine is really reticent with its peduncles too..that is the only one it has! I am just going with the flow..do not really know what triggers those peduncles to form or the buds to grow. Will update later on..the waiting continues. Smiling

Does anyone know? Mine has bloomed like a crazy thing all summer and is still going, but the blooms seem to come in successive waves. Still, I'll be cutting off a lot of developing peduncles when I move it indoors for the winter. Mine has proven to be an extraordinarily tough plant, but I can't begin to see what triggers it to bloom. Historically it's been a bit fractious about that.

Why do you want to remove the peduncles Donald?

I don't know a lot about Hoyas at all but was told by a few very knowledgeable growers that you should never remove the peduncles ... those are where future flowers form.

I'm not trimming peduncles per se, but I have to trim off a lot of the long stringy growth in order to keep it inside. I have it hanging high now, but the growth is sweeping the ground. I'll just cut all that to a manageable length to bring inside and, sadly, those long strings have lots of peduncles on them. I have to do this every year before I bring it in. It's a big container and quite heavy.

I guess if the vines are getting so long and you can't wind them around themselves to move plants indoors for winter, there's not much left to do except prune them but I'd try to leave some stems with peduncles intact to be sure to have blooms next season.

The peduncles on my fungii and Krimson Queen fell off for some reason?

Sometimes the peduncles do abort ... don't know why but I've had it happen before too; wonder if it has to do with sudden temperature or weather changes?

I do sort of hate to cut them off, but it doesn't seem to curtail bloom if the plant decides to bloom. The new strings seem as eager to produce blooms as the older growth.

That's definitely a possibility since it happened in Spring when there was lots of temperature fluctuations.

Many Hoya's bloom in response to day length. H. carnosa is more prone to bloom spring/summer thru early fall, but will bloom during the winter if it's happy.
Hoya australis, magnifica, calycina are fall bloomers in response to shorter days. Some will bloom only during the summer when the days are really long. Some need cool tempertures to bloom, like H. globulosa. It grows wonderfully for me. But I just don't have the temperatures that it likes to bloom, so I just enjoy the foliage.

Aww, I hate it when my Hoya's pout and aborts their peduncles! Seems to say to me, can't force me, I don't want to bloom Rolling my eyes. Hilarious!
