Wow, those are big fans Betty! Does he have a greenhouse? I threw away another 21 potted daylilies yesterday. Rotted to the core, nothing left of them. LOL.

Pete Harry live way down south in Florida so he didn't get to experience the really bad winter like the rest of us everywhere else.
Those 3 days that I had single digit weather with the highs in the very low 20s during the day Pete had one day in the high 40s maybe even 50 with a low in the low 30s (if that) and the other 2 days were 70s and 60s. His plants were probably not even phased one bit Smiling

He probably has a green house either way. Lucky him, right? I do not think he is in a good place as far as hurricanes go. I hear the green houses can catch wind and end up in another state. LOL. I sure hope that does not happen to Pete, but I would not live there. You seem to be in a good place, except for the bad soil and the roaches. Did he move?? I thought he was in Tavares...same as Nicole. Its not even as far south as Orlando. Its also in the middle of the state, not near the coast, so a hurricaine cant hit head on. I was going to go to his place, when I wnet to Nicoles in May, I will have to see if he moved.

I didn't mean way down south like all the way to Miami Whistling but yes it is Tavares which to me is still way down south and they have the great weather. The hybridizers down there are pretty close to each other.

I am a "named/registered daylily" novice, since all mine are hybrids I grew from seeds so I am only learning about daylily farms/nurseries. Now y'all have me curious who are all these hybridizers near Orlando? I live on the east coast of FL about 60 miles south of Kennedy Space Center. What are the names of these hybridizer's nurseries or farms?

There is a group of Hybridizers in North Central Florida and they have a group called Daylily Mecca so you can visit a lot of them at one time. I think. Green Grin!

I am laughing--all the day down South, huh??? I'm in Central FL as are many of the hybridizers, except I'm on the barrier island and they are in the middle of the state. We absolutely, without a doubt, have the best weather in FL. Seldom gets above 86 degrees in the summer, doesn't freeze in the winter and we usually have a breeze. I've lived in south FL and couldn't stand 85 degrees in the winter and 95 degrees in the summer. Love it here! Our friends envy this location and love to visit since we are a block from the beach--"The World's Most Famous Beach" as our local newspaper reminds us. For those of you who like old-time NASCAR beach racing, we actually walk in what was the race track when we go to the beach. No evidence that it was the track. Sand makes sure few things are permanent on the beach.

@Gleni, I love your avatar!

@florange ...I think I might be scared to live in a barrier island. Hatteras is a total mess when a hurricane comes through. I love you house, especially the colors.

Yes, Glen, 100% beach sand. Very fine and very soft. That's one of the reasons I grow daylilies in boxes. The other reason is our palm trees. When I had daylilies on the ground, Queen palm roots would come to the surface and strangle the daylily plants in order to have all that wonderful fertilizer for them selves.

On the other hand, things like colocasias, elephant ears, live oak trees, bromeliads, and most other tropicals grow very happily in the sand. The colocasias have to be fertilized because they are heavy feeders, but the broms don't care since they only use their roots to keep themselves upright. They don't use their roots to absorb food. I grow tropicals because they don't take very much care, so they leave me more time to fuss with the daylilies. Thumbs up

About hurricanes. Daytona Beach hasn't had a direct hit in well over 120 years. In 2004 we had 3 hurricanes visit, but they had made landfall on Sanibel Island (other side of state) and came up I-4, through Orlando, and exited the state here. We're not dumb! There's the Gulf Stream (a river in the ocean) that is warmer than the ocean's water. The hurricanes will follow that warm water, whizzing up the coast ignoring FL and the Gulf Stream takes those storms and dumps them right into Cape Hatteras. Once the storms start following the "river" they don't have the ability to break free along the FL coast. Apparently the Gulf Stream takes a sharp right turn (and goes out to sea) at Cape Hatteras, and the hurricanes just keep moving north, hitting that land that juts out into the ocean. Crying On one side, the GS protects us and on the other side, it really dumps on the Cape. We feel fairly safe here, although anything can happen. We just leave when the big storms are in the area.
