I'm pretty sure it's working on a new leaf. :)

And I've got to agree with people not wanting to leave negatives on the LA, I would hate to have to do that. There's been a couple of times I didn't leave feedback though.

Strange...I always thought that people with negative experiences where more than willing to post about it, and that people with positive experiences very seldom took the time to express it. Guess on the LA people think differently!

Seedfork - I think the people that deal/ buy dls at 20- and up are a pretty small group, and leaving negatives just causes bad feelings all the way around. I've left a couple of negatives on ebay, and sometimes will comment on my experiences with nurseries on forums or give a review on davesgarden, but so far I've only had one plant die and that might have been my fault since I didn't cover it when we got about 3" of rain when it was newly planted.

I've paid $500 for a daylily I could have soaked in a shot glass (direct from hybridizer) and that wouldn't be the first I've seen from some hybridizers for the big buck plants. However, this has been a bad year for most growers except for the Central Florida (did you catch that Florange nodding ) growers and those with controlled greenhouses. I know mine are nowhere near where they normally would be for this time of year and I hate sending them out but it is what I have and I am sending out a whole lot of refunds because some are just way too small (or died Crying )

I am way out of my league when the talk is about $500.00 daylilies instead of $5.00 daylilies.

Man I have a heart attack spending $60.00 on one. I think I've only done that twice. I got tired of waiting for them to come down in price any further. Every dollar I spend on Daylilies is a dollar I'm not spending on the cats. And they think that is terrible. Particularly when the box arrives and I won't let them even nibble on them. Sounds reasonable KimK. I think Kaspar knows I spend too much on daylilies. He got into the seedlings yesterday which are now half-sized. I am not happy but I think I'll spend more to spite him.

Thats why my seedlings are in my cheapo greenhouse. There is no way they would survive inside my house with my horde of fuzzbutts Sticking tongue out Before I bought the greenhouse, I would straight sow my seeds right into the garden row. I can't decide which way works best, but its much more fun watching the seeds come up in the greenhouse Hilarious! Whistling

Ouch! Soaking it in a shot glass would not be good!! Crying Makes me feel better about the one I had soaking in a measuring cup. --To be fair it's holding up better than I thought it would, and will be joining the other new arrivals in the yard next month, which are growing well btw. I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

As for trying to decide between spending on plants or animals... it's all good. Smiling

Interesting seeing what others have paid for daylilies. I'm terribly cheap! The most I ever paid for a daylily was $35.00 and I can't see myself doing that again. The top price I'll pay these days is $10.00 or $15.00. I'm in love with UF's and there are plenty of older gorgeous UF's that won't break the bank. Those high priced newer daylilies are nice, but I find many older and cheaper daylilies to be just as nice.

Well to be fair he told me it was small when I asked for it to be shipped in mid March. He actually told me when I ordered it he could send it then so I would have hated to see what it looked like in December.

Michele, I'd be babying that daylily for sure!

Joy, I'm more in line with your prices. I think the most I spent was $35 too. I sure do like a lot of the newer daylilies, but for myself, I can't justify the expense. However, I can understand why others do and why the prices on the newer ones are expensive. Hybridizing is a lot of hard work and long years.

I guess I really can't complain then about the 'Red Friday' I got, soaked in a measuring cup and potted in a 4" pot. Funny thing was the shipping! Such a dinky plant in a HUGE box! Almost missed the plant in all the paper stuffed in the box.

The smallest daylily I ever got was Emerald Starburst. I paid $l00 for it and I could soak it in a measuring cup too but it only had 1 small root dangling from it. I thought there is no way that this daylily is going to make it. It didn't look like it even had a crown on it. I decided to put it in a pot before I would put it in the ground and I'm glad I did. It made it fine and 3 years later I have 3 fans.

Probably a couple of years ago when I was getting a little more serious about dls I read where a woman said she had a lot of plants... (I think it was a few hundred)... and that she didn't have anything in them. She said she'd buy single fans, wait for them to double, divide them and sell her extra fan for what she paid. It would be some work trying to figure out the best way to do everything but what a plan. Smiling I've also read about where people have sold 'collections' of dls out of their yards to nurseries.

I admit to paying $100 or more for a Daylily because I hybridize, but ...... if I got something as small as some of you are describing that grower/hybridizer would never get my daylily dollars again. If that is all they have to send, then in my opinion they are selling it too soon. .....

I believe in sending things that you would be happy getting yourself and there are plenty of growers / hybridizers who do that.

One of the BEST is Judy Davisson. http://www.picturetrail.com/da...
Every dollar I have spent with Judy has been a daylily dollar well spent .... value plus.
