Photo this August 2014:
So good to compare photos, new growth continued upright getting taller.., I wonder when it will decide to be more fan-like..or is it just following the direction of the sun causing it to grow upright. I also notice it is making some pokey tips..reminds me of the tips of agave leaves.

I put these leaves in the ground in April at my Mom's house, a spot that ended up having less light than I thought it would. Dug up yesterday. They were buried about halfway, which in retrospect, was probably much more deep than necessary but I knew nobody would be watering them. I think they're totally cute!

Cinta, sorry that happened! (If it's the same kind, I have replacements, if necessary, anytime.)

I know your feelings about futzing with inside plants for winter, but wonder if maybe a kitchen sink or bathroom window you are near every day might offer a spot for trying a leaf in water? Not that you'd have to do anything to it on a daily basis, but just be able to see if it's running out of water.

I've done a couple that way before, and it sure went faster than this, and so much more fun to watch than glancing at leaf stumps buried in soil occasionally and observing, "Nope, nothing's changed whatsoever at all in any way..." What's it doing? No idea... Never had either way fail, but still, in soil's a total snooze. I don't propagate plants to do it in the most politically correct way, but to amuse myself. The pic I just showed was amusing, but so much time elapsed between burial and excavation. Without x-ray vision, the exciting developments were not visible. End result = same, but level of amusement, vastly different.

For soil or water, let callous at least overnight, up to a few days.

In water, not enough experience to say what's ideal, but I chose to keep a steady 1/2-3/4 inch of water. That worked. Since it was a clear container, I could see the tiny pup as soon as it started forming, and it turned green from the start. Definitely amusing ;)

Love those new growth on your photo Tiffany! Nice view! Lovey dubby

When I salvaged my badly rotted Sans, it took a real long while, had to really keep it dry since it was winter then, pulled it indoors, totally new media, in a smaller container. It only started coming back when it was in Spring..still very slowly. That is the only time I started giving it some water. By summer I allowed it to get some outside temps but still in a shady side, and it liked it. I was very careful in watering, it was touch and go, the leaves easily seem to rot, maybe because it was still very weak, but it eventually recovered, my sign was the new growth that peeked..what a relief! Cinta,
Nice Sans. tri. Black Futura 'Goldedge'. I saw some like that at Lowes and has the same sporting strips. Some develop into 'Gold Flame' while some develop into 'Kristi'. Most just stay the same. I don't know where they are shipped in from and must be where they breed those other verities from. I purchased one from Wal-Mart and was all black. I sent it to Greg (hijole) because he so much wanted one. Strange he never showed it or posted it.
One leaf does not make a plant but I do love those unstable ones. Never know what you might end up with .

Oh Spitz, those are lipstick palms in the back aren't they? I'm jealous. I've looked and looked for those here and haven't found one. They are common a little farther south, in Costa Rica and Panama but for some reason I never see them here.

Yup, maybe 20 years old had to chop off a few stems so my succulents get more sunshine. Red palms need lots of water, they can't tolerate drought especially when young. They can tolerate standing water though, they naturally occur in tropical swamps.
They used to be quite rare and expensive 20-30 years ago, now they are everywhere.

I believe that, like any other plant, they bloom when mature enough to do so, and cultural conditions don't prevent it. I believe with all of my heart that it's NOT caused by being pot/root bound, a condition that often coincides with maturity. Why the credit always goes to potbound instead of maturity is confounding to me.

All I know for sure is that when such a gift appears, it's always a thrill!

Totally agree with you here Tiffany!
Interestingly enough, I repotted a couple of mature and very pot/root bound clumps about three years ago--one I just up-ed the pot size--a little less than double--and the other I split into two clumps and repotted half in the original pot and the other half in a same size new pot. They had been in their original pots for about 12-15yrs and had never bloomed. All three bloomed within about a month of repotting--one had only one bloom, the other two each had two. (and OMG what a fantastic surprise--it was like late Feb. or early March and the whole house smelled wonderful in the middle of the night Big Grin )
Anyway--I can't really know what exactly triggered blooming, but it sure as heck was NOT being pot/root bound.

If I didn't shuffle these plants around twice per year (going in the ground in spring, back into pots for winter,) I could keep track of how old a rosette is when it blooms...

Noticed this this morning. The light color of the leaves indicate it's one of this years' pups that is forming this bloom stalk. While inside over winter, the leaves turn darker, none are this bright still by spring. This plant was in the ground (since April) until about 3-4 weeks ago, then dug up to go in a pot to come inside to escape winter. Definitely not bound in any way.
